Being the Husband and Father of Mexican Americans I decided to read the law in its entirety.

It states that a law officer must have probable cause to stop someone, (this is the same as the South Dakota Seatbelt law: A law officer must have probable cause to pull someone over, just because they are not wearing a seat belt is not a probable cause if pulled over for speeding, you may also receive a ticket for no seatbelt). In AZ just because you are Hispanic does not mean you will be pulled over, if you have a broken tail light you will be pulled over and asked for your Driver’s License, just like a person of any other nationality.

The law also states that anyone stopped must show proper Identification, a Drivers License, Military ID, MVD identification card, or a Native American Card. Federal law is very clear if you are here on a visa you must have your papers on you at all times. That is the law. If you cannot provide the proper papers you will be detained, and given a chance to provide them. If you do not provide them you will be deported, if you do provide them you may be fined for not having them with you. I know people here from Mexico on Visas, they spend a great deal of time in Border towns in Texas and New Mexico, they would never leave home without their Visas or Green Cards, even though they have U.S. Drivers licenses.

I guess people should educate themselves before they start attacking a State for being reactive to a National problem. This is just a clarification and a crack down on how the Federal Law is enforced. Truth is, it’s no different than someone driving on a suspended license, if you don’t break the traffic laws you will more than likely will not get caught.

The opinions out there are that if you are Hispanic, look Hispanic or speak Spanish you will get pulled over, harassed and detained by the cops. If this is true the cops are acting illegally not you, there are bigots everywhere and I’m sad to say there are many in the police services, however the new Bill does not give the Police that right, it just tells them to do their jobs and make sure that the people pulled over for breaking traffic laws are here legally. It also has nothing to do with being Hispanic; anyone pulled over must provide the proper ID. This law might actually stop the next guy that tries to put a Bomb in Time Square.

Don’t take my word for it, read the law Arizona Law SB 1070 it’s all over the Internet read the actual law not the opinions of a bunch of Liberal bloggers. I agree some of the wording is confusing, but I’m not scared to take my Family to AZ because of it, and neither should anyone else.

Finally Dug Out! http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2010/01/05/finally-dug-out/ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2010/01/05/finally-dug-out/#comments Tue, 05 Jan 2010 00:14:14 +0000 Administrator http://sodakadventure.com/blog/?p=111 Well I went to Texas over the Holidays, and boy did I miss a storm, sort of. I left on Sunday the 20th, the plan was simple. Go to Colorado and see my Aunt and Uncle, perhaps sneak in a little coyote hunting. This plan worked great, when I got there Bruce had 2 coyotes in the yard he had shot the day before. Got there early evening after catching up on some sleep I got up early to help Bruce do “Chores” this took about 10 minutes then we were off to get a coyote. At 9 am it was already pushing 40 degrees and it was getting warmer by the minute. We only saw one coyote and didn’t get a shot as he went out of sight, Bruce got a phone call and I had to get to Texas, so that hunt was over. I did however get a picture of the coyotes he had in the yard.

Colorado Coyotes

Arrived in Texas late on the 21st had the 23rd and part of the 24th set aside for some calling but the weather didn’t cooperate. The storm that was socking South Dakota reached all the way down to Texas. One thing is for sure, I’m glad we have the DOT that we do in South Dakota, Texas is clueless when it comes to snow removal. After a 2 and a half day trip home through some heavy weather, I got back to the Ranch in time for the dig out. 21 inches of new snow that the Good Lord piled up in huge drifts. Digging out the 1st day I shot a coyote but couldn’t get to him without a long walk. Got some trails cut and the cows fed, it’s amazing, you can’t go anywhere with a pickup or a 4wheeler, it’s Tractor or Snowmobile. I’ve been making trails with the Tractor so I can follow them with my pickup later, but the coyotes are using my trails as much as I am. They are having a hard time moving around as well.
Horses in Snow

Case and point, today I went 12 miles up the highway to Eagle Butte to get parts, on the way home I spotted a coyote about 300 yards off the highway, I pulled over to take a shot (in South Dakota it is legal to take a varmint from a road or right of way) he saw me stop and trotted off slowly, I led him perfect and dropped him in his tracks, after thinking about it a bit, I decided to leave him lay because the walk would kill me and a pickup wouldn’t make it. I went another 5 miles down the road and spotted another one this coyote was closer to the highway, I shot him, taked to my neighbor a bit then walked out to get him. I tell you walking in this stuff is a workout, you better be in good shape to go very far at all. I ran across some guys in the coffee shop the other day, they were going coyote chasing on Snowmobiles. This type of cover makes coyotes easy prey to snow machines, not the most ethical way to get them but effective. Well that gets us caught up since my last blog. I’ve made a few stands but haven’t had any luck, in fact I just got back from one where I blew a coyote out the other side without getting a shot. I’m going to start calling my trails as they seem to be a highway for all critters who get tired of plowing snow.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the Big Male coyote I shot today. Happy Hunting!

More Mishaps, plus a request for Santa~ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/16/more-mishaps-plus-a-request-for-santa/ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/16/more-mishaps-plus-a-request-for-santa/#comments Wed, 16 Dec 2009 16:56:18 +0000 Administrator http://sodakadventure.com/blog/?p=108 I’ve messed up again and missed 2 more coyotes. I know people are always reading about the perfect stand and watching video where it seems like they never miss. That’s probably why nobody has knocked on my door for a show on the Outdoor Channel.

First off let me tell you of something that went right, I had my good friends Mark & Chief out to help brand some cows the other day, theses guys are good friends they are there whenever I need them. I felt I owed them something so I ordered a couple of Ruffidawgs and Predator Quest III from Les Johnson. I gave them each a call and a DVD, I know it’s not much after all they do for me but I know they will enjoy watching Les, and laugh at him like I do, and perhaps they will see something that will make them better callers, I’m sure not improving. After we finished branding we went out for some afternoon calling, while driving to the stand we jumped a coyote, knowing he was going to leave the country after we got so close I circled the pickup around, and missed a running shot, Chief was riding in the seat behind me, he took one last poke at him and dropped him on the run at about 350yds, it was spectacular. We all left our phones and cameras at home but believe me, it was one to remember. We had no luck calling that afternoon, got busted walking into a stand and only had enough light for 2 other stands.

Yesterday right before sundown I decide to make a stand, after calling about 15 minutes Gus took off and he had a coyote, he caught him before I could shoot, and I didn’t want to shoot my dog. After giving him a whipp’n they both went over the hill. I jumped on the ATV and tried to catch them, When I got over the hill, the coyote was gone and Gus was breathing hard. Not enough blood to track so another coyote has been educated.

That brings us to this morning: The wind was out of the east, the sun was in the South East, so I called with the wind, big opening to my East side where I could see them try to circle downwind from either direction. After about 10 minutes I heard a bark and a howl to my left, down in the creek, this was South West of my location. Most hunters will tell you that you are busted when they bark, and everything I’ve experienced is the same, but I had walked into this stand from a long ways and didn’t want to give up that easy. I played the bark on the FoxPro, then changed the call from Jackrabbit Distress to Dying Jack, played the bark again, then went back to Jackrabbit distress. Here he comes I know he’s going to circle right because that is downwind, but no he circles left. This idiot went way around, up wind I watched him go out of sight to the hill behind me. I was in some of that old clover left from the wet summer we had, and I had left Gus at home. He came hard I knew he wasn’t going to stop he was going to try to ambush me. I’m pretty nervous at this point, so I take my gun off the sticks and click the safety to the fire position. I hear the old clover start to rattle. I can’t take it anymore, I stood up and he was right there, tried an offhand running shot at 20yds. You know how hard it is to find a coyote in your scope at 20yds?? He went out of sight, I didn’t see him again until 300yds, still running, took a shot but the game was over. The coyote won this encounter. I really need a shotgun for days like this.

So Santa, I know you have plenty of predators in the North Pole, and that you are an avid reader of my blog, so if you have time (I know it’s late) I would like a Remington 870, 12 gauge, magnum, with a patternmaster choke tube. If you don’t have time I understand, just take care of my kids and Happy Hunting!!!!

Merry Christmas to all, we hope to have some video to show you soon as Mark and Chief will be doing some calling with the video camera this weekend and I am going to Colorado, Texas and New Mexico for the holidays and plan to get some calling in while visiting each state. So check back next week.

ATVs and Coyote Hunting http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/11/atvs-and-coyote-hunting/ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/11/atvs-and-coyote-hunting/#comments Fri, 11 Dec 2009 00:08:29 +0000 Administrator http://sodakadventure.com/blog/?p=103 I got this coyote while calling from a 4 wheeler

I got this coyote while calling from a 4 wheeler

It was 12 degrees today, I spent most of the day outside, feeding cows and checking water tanks. I took off on the 4 wheeler about 2:00. I took my rifle as well. I had a couple of things to do but thought I might call a coyote or 2 on the way home. I’ve tried calling coyotes from 4 wheelers before but have alway gotten pretty cold doing it. One thing about coyote hunting in your pickup you can warm up between stands. Many calling contests do not allow 4 wheelers because many people use them to run coyotes down, they also don’t allow shotguns for this same reason. I agree with those rules, but I’m going to give my leasure calling from an ATV more of a chance. This fall I bought my first ATV since moving back to the ranch, with it and the new .243 from the last post we got a coyote. Here are a few of the Pros and Cons for using an ATV while out calling coyotes.

Pros:
Less overall noise: I understand ATVs are louder than most gasoline pickups, but you don’t have to go to every stand driving 30mph, you don’t do that in your pickup. Throttle down a little as you travel between stands, there are no slamming of doors, dinging of alarms, or radios to give away your intentions. Also by traveling slower less chance of breaking your neck.

More stand opportunities: Depending on the weather and my mood, my stand opportunities in a pickup are limited, how many times have you pulled up to an area as far as you could go and said to yourself “I bet there is a coyote down there” but after awhile you decide it’s too far to walk. This usually happens to me at the end of a day of calling. I’m wore out and I just can’t bring myself to walk 1/4 of a mile to get a coyote. On an ATV I can get in farther, undetected. Less walking means more stands, more stands should equal more coyotes.

I’m sure I will find more pros as I experiment more with this idea.

Cons

Cold: ATVs have no heater or cab to keep you warm, unless you splurge and buy a cab kit for a new Rhino, Ranger or any other Side by side ATV. Even with a cab the heaters in these don’t work the best and the set up puts you out as much as a late model used pickup. I am somewhat of a wimp when it comes to being cold, I can’t wait to get my fingers shoved down the defrost when the pickup warms up. However with better cold weather hunting gear, it’s getting easier to brave the elements all the time. ATVs have you exposed to the elements, if it’s 5 degrees with a 15mph wind your windchill can be anywhere around 10-20 degrees below 0 and you and driving an ATV another 15mph you are making it that much colder going from stand to stand.

Hunting with friends: For me hunting is all about spending time with friends, I hunt plenty by myself, but I really enjoy hunting with my buddies, on and ATV you are perhaps a little to close for comfort if you know what I mean. A side by side would be better for this, but even then its hard to get 3 or 4 guys together without multiple ATVs, and the more you have the more potential noise you might make.

I guess it’s really up to the hunter, but being someone who has been against it in the past, you will see me packing an ATV around more often this winter. Stay tuned to see how I fair.

2 Mistakes = Future Success http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/02/2-mistakes-future-success/ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/12/02/2-mistakes-future-success/#comments Wed, 02 Dec 2009 00:38:18 +0000 Administrator http://sodakadventure.com/blog/?p=98 It’s sure starting to get dark early these days, it won’t be long before the shortest day of the year has caught up to us, and the Ice Fishing season will be in full swing. Today is December 1st, I’ve decided that any coyote shot after today will be hung on the North Side of my Barn, so I can keep a running total of our success (or lack there of) this winter. I’ve been pretty busy in the mornings lately so my calling has taken a hit, the wind was suppose to be blustery today so last night I decided to make a stand in a spot I’ve never called before, wind was good, had the sun to my back and it was getting close to dark. I called for about 20 minutes using an closed reed Dan Thompson, with no luck. As I walked back to the pickup I could hear a bunch of coyotes making noise about 2 miles to the west of me, I knew it was getting dark but I had to try it. I hammered on the gas when I got in the truck, got to a place where I thought the coyotes might be, and started my walk in. By the time I got situated it was almost to dark to see, but I gave a blow or 2 on the Dan Thompson, after about 15 minutes I couln’t even see through my scope, I stood up and gathered my gear, I heard a bark to my left, and then another. There had to be a coyote but I couldn’t see him. I probably educated him for future stands, Lesson #1 it never pays to educate a coyote!

This morning it was blowing to beat heck, I knew it would be but I stepped out before sunrise to check, I have a bad case of coyote fever lately and staying indoors just isn’t my thing. It was the 1st of December though and I had bills to pay, better get started. Then the wife called and asked me if I would run our 9 year old to the clinic his little brother had a bad cough and seems to have given it to poor Jerin. I thought the day was shot so I might as well, after taking care of Jerin and getting him off to school I payed some bills, but around 3:00 coyote fever started tugging at me.
Let me give you some history: I hate wind, I don’t like it one little bit. I do everything in my power not to call in it, if the weather says wind I skip contests, I do everything to avoid being out in it, but the fever had me.

I decided one stand, prove to myself I can call a coyote in the wind. you see those critters must hate wind too, because I’ve never been very good at calling them on windy days. They must stay at home as well. With a Strong NNW wind blowing I decided to try a draw it ran NNE from where I would set up my stand, it also had a lot of brush and willows in the bottom of it, if I was a coyote that is where I would hole up on a day like today. I also recently traded for a new .243 Savage that would be a little better in the wind than my old .223 standby, I thought it would be a good time to get my first coyote with it. My approach was perfect I found a huge fencepost to sit against and I set the FX3 right on top of the post so the sound would carry against the wind. after about 3 minutes of calling there one stood about 70yds away. I put the crosshairs in the middle of his chest and pulled the trigger, (I know I pulled instead of squeezed). I missed, at 70yds I missed, this would never have happened with the .223, I’m just not used to that gun yet, it has a little more pull, a little more kick, and a little more bang. I’m sure it was operator error, I was so mad I picked a spot on a tree 85yds away and drilled it. Proving it was operator error. The only way I’m going to get used to using this gun is by shooting it in situations like this so we will try again. However Lesson #2 was a good one.
Lesson #2: It is possible to call coyotes in the wind.

We honored our men and women in uniform today, by celebrating our “Right to Bear Arms” I got out my favorite sniper rifle and took down coyote #1, while Chief made a 285yd shot on coyote #2. by 11:30 it was 57 degrees, and to warm to call coyotes, but what a beautiful morning. I’ll let Mark and Chief tell you how I didn’t see coyote #1 when he was 70yds from me, and waited until he was 240yds before I took the shot, but I’m sure it’s all hogwash. Thanks to all our Armed Forces from wars past and present, when you come home call me and we will take you coyote calling.

Opening Day 2009 http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/11/08/opening-day-2009/ http://sodakadventure.com/blog/2009/11/08/opening-day-2009/#comments Sun, 08 Nov 2009 00:26:08 +0000 Administrator http://sodakadventure.com/blog/?p=75 So it’s Friday Morning before opening day, I have a big day planned, there is a cattle sale in Faith, and I’m in need of some more big black angus mommas, so I go out to make my daily circle, and just South of my home, right along the highway there has been a large herd of does hanging around. I decided to go see if any Bucks had moved in yet. Sure enough there is a big one, he is way out passed his ears and has a thick neck and huge shoulders, this is a wallhanger, at least for this part of the country. I know deer season opens in the morning and I know people are driving up and down the highway scouting. There is no way he’s going to make it until Saturday, to many people with Buck Fever, that have no regards for property boundaries. However I have things to do, so I high tail it to Faith for the sale.

When the sale is over I hurry back to the ranch, I have a busy morning planned and we are holding off on Deer Camp until the following weekend. I go to see if I can find the buck, he is nowhere to be seen, I’m sure someone took a shot at him, and ran the herd off, but that’s hunting.

The next morning, I have to turn out the cows I bought, as soon as the trucks get there, I’m suppose to help my neighbors ship calves, and my wife went on a shopping spree in Rapid so I have all 3 boys to take care of. I wake up at 4am, about 2.5 hours before sunup. I’m trying to figure out where that buck could have gone, I’ve already talked my mother into watching the 2 younger boys, I tell her, “I’ll have them there at sunup” believe me I wasn’t a second late on that promise. The little ones are taken care of, I call the trucker he says he is about 45 minutes out. I tell my oldest, “lets go look for that buck”. Sure enough, he was headed right back for his spot by the highway, I’m a little torn because my buddies are coming for Deer Camp and I hate to shoot my deer without them, but this idiot is not going to live another week so I pull out my rifle and step out of the truck, telling JJ to stay and when I call him bring the pickup. Everything worked perfect, dropped him with one shot, took some pictures and had him gutted and loaded before the trucks arrived with my cows.

Look out Jim Shockey

Look out Jim Shockey

I went to the neighbors and helped them get trucks loaded, then stopped and talked to some buddies, and show off a little. Then hung the deer, fed some cows, got the kids, and finally skinned and deboned the deer, due to the heat. He is 100% on ice now. Not exactly how I would have wrote the story from scratch but this is how it happened, heck I didn’t even cammo up and I have a lot of money spent on cammo. This will give me more time to run the video during Deer Camp next week. Stay tuned for round 2 of our Video Adventures.

So here we are 2009, time for the annual Antelope Hunt, decided to try and do some filming since my wife got a Sony Handycam for her birthday last May. I got an old tripod out of the closet and on October 3rd, 2009 I was going to become just like Jim Shockey, with my friends as the hunters and me as the Guide/Producer/Cameraman. Let me just say this, easier in theory than in reality. We had a great hunt, got a doe 3 nice bucks, all 3 were herd bucks of some kind and had some age to them, none were over 16″, but they were all trophies in our minds.

<

The top buck was the first one we got down, he had a nice black face, great horns that came forward instead of straight up. The ivory tips were nice too, Courtney made a great shot and dropped him in one.

The 2nd buck was taken on Sunday Morning, we got 2 bucks out of this large group of antelope we had watched and filmed them the day before but they were just over the fence out of our hunting ground, I was sure they would be back in the morning so we came and it was productive. Check out the broken tips on him.

<

I've been watching this buck for almost a month, he looked old, walked with a limp, and definately had one horn that looked shorter than the other. He won't score high on the B&C, but he also wouldn't have made it through the winter, so I'm happy I took him, check out the ivory, and the one horn that is really curled back, giving you the illusion that it is shorter. Made a stalk on him on Sunday morning got to within 200yds and took the front shoulder out in one shot, gave him one more to make sure he was down, seconds later Chief let the hammer down on his, we approached from different angles so we would have the escape covered and it worked perfectly.

Ok back to the filming; we failed to get a kill shot on film, we tried and tried but we had such a hard time getting close that getting them shot was about all we could accomplish, however we made our first “SoDakAdventure.com” Production, and as we get better, we will buy better equipment and shoot better video. Don’t be a critic, just enjoy!!
