What will your headstone say???
The other day I posted this on my facebook page and only got 1 comment:
Murdock Halligan You know so many people spend thier lives worried about what outsiders think about them and how much money they have. The world would be a better place if everyone went through life working on what they want their headstone to say.

My thoughts at the time were “nobody cares”, however on Sunday in church the thought came back to me again. We started out in class talking about anger, and losing your temper. Thoughts on how we treat others and how we control our temper. When it comes right down to it, we get really angry at things we cannot control, things in our lives that go wrong for no reason. It’s easy to blame your wife, blame your kids, or even blame god, but is it truly anyone’s fault?? By controling our temper we make the world a better place. I know countless people who worry so much about how clean their house is (in case anyone stops by) that their kids don’t even know how to be kids, they are so worried about getting mud on the carpet, or dripping ice cream on the new tile, that they can’t even enjoy the rain or the Klondike for what they are, enjoyable. I know people who are so worried about making more money that they end up in the hospital with heart problems at a late age, do they even realize they never took their kids on a real family vacation. I know people my age who were really good at sports and rodeo, who’s fathers never saw them compete, because they couldn’t leave the ranch.
Have you ever walked through a cemetary and read the headstones? Do they say “Here Lays a Wealthy Man” or “He never left his cows unattended”. No they say “Loving Mother & Grandmother” and “Devoted Father”. Many more of these headstones say simply Name & Date. Who were these Name & Date people?? Were they Devoted Fathers or Loving Mothers??
As you make decisions going forward, remember it’s OK to make money, it’s also OK to be devoted to your job, but remember someday, someone will have to decide what to put on your headstone, what do you want it to say??
Bad Decision for Bad River Town!!

It is becoming clearer and clearer that the State’s Attorney of Stanley County is leaning towards not procecuting in the horse abuse case. This may be a way to save face locally but looking at it unbias. It could be a huge mistake for the River Cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre. The Stanley County Fairgrounds host the 4-H Rodeo Finals, the JR. High Rodeo Finals, a Little Britches Rodeo, an independent 4-H Rodeo, an SDRA Rodeo, and this August they are hosting a PRCA Rodeo. These are major events for the local economy, and if the rodeo community decides to start boycotting these events or Associations pull their events from the Stanley County Fairgrounds because of this tragedy, that will pull millions of dollars of revenue out of these two towns. Fort Pierre is the home of Casey Tibbs, has been host to the State 4-H Rodeo Finals as long as there has been one, wouldn’t it be awful if Fort Pierre lost these events because we don’t want to prosecute.
I am not calling for a boycott, I think the facts need to be revealed in a court of law, but if this does not go to court, boycotts are a real possibility.
I have heard there are as many as 10 eye witnesses to what went on, if that is true why wouldn’t there at least be signed warrants by now? I’m not saying anyone is guilty, I believe you are innocent until proven otherwise, but I do believe that if Stanley County doesn’t at least try to hold someone accountable, it may hurt the pocketbooks of the enire area, not just the horse owner.
This will be unpopular but…………………………..
As I have been reading the blogs, emails and unconfirmed reports of what happened in Fort Pierre over the 4th of July. I’m slowly wondering what is taking the prosecution so long. When I wonder I think, and thinking can be dangerous. I’ve been using the Capital Journal for my info as they would be closest to the story. The angry comments after each artical are slowly being changed to wait and see comments. As I think about it, what if, they don’t prosecute. What if it’s not a case the State can win?
For example, I can imagine the opening argument of the defense:
”
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, what we have here is a Witch Hunt, a Lynch Mob. My Clients have done nothing wrong and over the next few days I will prove to you that it was the horse’s owner and not my clients who was neglecting this fine animal. On the day in question, Ms. Hawleg turned her horse out into an open pen, not one designated for contestant horses but into the competition arena. It was July 4th, Firecrackers poping everywhere, enough to drive the typical human crazy not to mention an animal, a prey animal who’s insticts tell them to flee in the time of danger. After turning her horse out into a virtual WarZone, Ms. Hawleg went back to bed, not even worried about the fear her horse might be experiencing. My clients were having a party nearby, and yes they admit they were in no condition to be horse wranglers, but when they saw “Dually” escape, they felt it was their duty to track him down and return him to the fairgrounds. In his fear the horse ran uncontrolably, through a fence, into a car and down the paved streets of Fort Pierre. They could have simply contacted the owner, but she was nowhere to be found, and they were not sure who the owner was. After a fierce chase they found the horse and it looked awful, after trying to capture it they realized this horse was scared to death. This scared my clients, and they did not do the right thing, they too fled, thinking they would be held resposible for what had happened. This was not the right way to handle the situation, they should have called the authorities, hindsight is a wonderful thing. They did not call the authorities, however if they would have gotten Dually back to the Fairgrounds safely with no injuries, my clients would be rewarded instead of prosecuted. Over the course of this trial, you will hear testimony that shows that Dually was neglected but by his owner and not my clients”.
I know this is going to ruffle some feathers, but remember this is not my opinion or what I think happend, however I’m am trying to put myself in the shoes of the State’s Attorney as well as the Judge who will be issuing the warrants. Cases like this are won with lawyers, more than they are won with the facts. I will say again that I don’t believe this account and I do believe the horse was abused, but those of us waiting for the culprits to get what they deserve, may be waiting awhile.
Micheal Vick, Rodeo, and Scumbags.
OK so here we are, 2009 Micheal Vick just got out of jail for Dogfighting and for the killing of dogs. Although I don’t condone what Micheal Vick did, I do believe what happend in Fort Pierre over the 4th of July weekend is much worse. The news stories on this have been very vauge but let me copy in a description I recieved in a forward and perhaps you will understand.
Hi everyone, need your prayers for Wendy and her horse.
She was rodeoing this 4th was at Ft. Pierre, done with the rodeo and fireworks were going off.
Put Dully in her trailer, got up about midnight, put him in the arena as all yards were taken, saw young people partying but didn’t think anything of it, got up at 6am he was gone. Terrified went looking for him along with many others, seems the partiers had rode him down the main street so hard ripping his shoes off. Tied him to a tree roped his legs, beat him took his front and back legs with ropes an stretched him out he fell to the ground, tied his legs as you would a calf and roped and beat him, he is cut all over burned his legs, the dad of the one kid hid him at his place another kid found him told her to get the sheriff to go there not to go alone, i am sure they were going to destroy him. They brought him to her his head fell into her arms. She rushed him to vet his legs were swelling an after washing him off found it to be even worse. Today his legs broke open and can see the tendons, if the tendon stays on the bone and if they can keep infection out. He may heal but I don’t think he will be the same from something so terrible. She is beside herself. There is more but this is enough for you to know the jest of it all. We need your prayers
I know the NFL is far more popular than Rodeo, and that things that happen on the East Coast are in the news far more often, but this is awful, this wasn’t some unwanted, uncared for, Mut. This was an athelete, this horse was easilly worth between $25,000 and $100,000 depending on who you ask, and to the owner this horse was priceless. There are names floating around on who has done this, but I refuse to add until it is for certain. Let’s say this, in the Wild West when this countries morals were a little bit more relaxed and the law was few and far between, things like this got no trial and no sentence. A Rope, and A Tree were all that was needed, now stealing horses, and cattle is a small offense. If Micheal Vick got 2 years, these people should get 20.
There are groups all over the web, Facebook has 3 that I know of, people collecting money for the owner, people calling for punishment of the drunks. All of that is good, but nothing would make me happier than to see the offenders sitting on the back of a healthy “Dually” with a rope tied to their necks and having “Dually” be the last horse they ever have between their legs as he leaves them hanging.
I don’t know Weny personally, but I feel this kind of thing shouldn’t happen, especially in my hometown a known rodeo town. Thoughts and prayers go out to Wendy, Dually and everyone who has been touched by them.
